Mic Knight created this welded aluminum sculpture to resemble a Cuban sandwich. It was one of the pieces of art in "The Cuban Sandwich Show" held in Tampa, June, 2011. Every piece of art in the curated show had to be reminiscent of Tampa in some way.
…and here's a closeup view showing some of the details of Mic's unique method for working with aluminum
An article at TBO Online stated "Tampa artist Mic Knight has created what could be the poster piece for the show. It's a welded aluminum and found object sculpture that clearly resembles a Cuban sandwich, assuming you know what a Cuban sandwich looks like. It can be seen in the biggest single visual exhibition of the show at the Hillsborough Community College's Ybor Art Gallery. That's where 44 invited and juried artists will express their vision of the theme in paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, photography and mixed media art."
"The Cuban Sandwich Show," began in 1991 under the guidance of Gordon and Denise Mhyre. This year it was presented by the Artists and Writers Group, in cooperation with Hillsborough Community College's Ybor City Campus and the Ybor City Development Corp. The show was curated by well-known Ybor City artist and teacher David Audet, who told TBO.com, "I wanted to expand it [from its original size] and include as many venues as I could."
The result was a show that extended across Tampa, with Ybor City at the heart of it. With the theme, "Tampa… and/or Cuban Sandwiches," participating artists were challenged to unleash their imaginations in wacky and wonderful ways. The result was a multicultural feast of creativity in many forms, including live music, poetry, scavenger hunts, original films, performance art, photography, paintings and more.
